Microsoft is expected to maintain Windows Phone 7.5 for use in smartphones
after the launch of Windows Phone 8 in the fourth quarter of 2012, according
to Taiwan-based handset supply chain makers.
WP8 has significantly higher hardware requirements than WP7.5 and will cater
to the mid- to high-end segments, the sources indicated. As WP8 is not
downward compatible with WP7.5, Microsoft will upgrade WP7.5 to WP7.8 which
will add some functions from WP8, and be used in low-end to mid-range models
targeting emerging markets, the sources noted.
