Energy balances are a very important part of any analysis of a chemical
reactor, particularly when the heat of reaction is large. In this study, fuel
oil of nominal composition C20H40 is burned in 50 percent excess air. The
process is adiabatic and it goes to completion. Assume the heat of combustion
of C20H40 at 77℉ is 3,206700 cal/mol
C20H40 + 30O2 => 20CO2 + 20H2O(liq)
And the temperature of the flue gases is 2900, what are your designed
temperatures of fuel and air respectively when they enter the reactor? Note
that the heat of capacities you need can be gotten from your related
textbooks or Perry’s chemical engineering handbook.
(Hint: Use a mesh plot and a contour plot to solve this problem.)
