Hi,
UNIX-like operating systems do not really rely
on filename-extension for file-type-determination.
Instead, they tend to use the so-called "magic"
(usually) at the very beginning of the file.
Try, for instance,
file filename.a
or
od filename.a | less
to peek into the file.
Theoretically, *.a could be anything...
